Cycling after knee repacement surgery

My story

After years of coaching and playing tennis, both my knees needed replacing at 55.

Post operation I followed a regular programme of physical therapy before moving onto a stationary bike. Quite quickly my range of movement improved and I was able to ride outdoors 6 weeks later.

A couple of months later, I was regularly cycling a few times a week of up to 40kms each ride.

In short, cycling is one of the best low-impact exercises and plays a crucial role in physiotherapy and long-term recovery.

I'd love to share the knowledge I gained through the process, so If you would like advice on how you can incorporate cycling into a regular programme of recovery, get into contact.

Key benefits of cycling after knee replacement surgery

1. Improves Range of Motion (ROM)

  • Cycling moves the new joint through a controlled arc of motion.
  • It helps prevent stiffness and maintains flexibility in the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calf muscles.
  • Patients typically achieve smoother bending and straightening with consistent cycling.

2. Enhances Circulation and Reduces Swelling

  • Gentle, repetitive pedaling promotes blood flow to the knee area.
  • Better circulation helps decrease post-surgical edema (swelling) and aids in tissue healing.

3. Strengthens Supporting Muscles

  • Strengthens the quadriceps, hamstrings, hip flexors, and calf muscles — all essential for standing, walking, and stair use.
  • Strong surrounding muscles reduce stress on the artificial joint, improving function and longevity.

4. Low Impact on the Joint

  • Cycling is non–weight-bearing, which means it minimizes impact compared to walking or jogging.
  • Ideal for joint protection and preventing wear on the prosthesis.

5. Improves Joint Coordination and Balance

  • Helps retrain neuromuscular control — the brain's ability to coordinate the muscles around the knee.
  • Promotes confidence in movement and smoother gait patterns.

6. Aids in Cardiovascular and Overall Fitness

  • Keeps heart and lungs active while being gentle on the joint.
  • Supports healthy body weight, reducing long-term load on the knee.
